Chapter 7
"I'm just going to phone the hospital before we leave for work."
"Okay."
Linzi's answering shout came from the bedroom. She was still dressing and feeling very sluggish after staying up late waiting for Loren to come home and then listening to her account of the evening. When she'd finally gone to bed, it was only to toss and turn for what seemed like hours before drifting off into a sleep haunted by dreams of strange goings-on at Lockington Court. Dreams in which Georgina and Archie cavorted in front of the bedroom doors, and Daisy danced with Geoffrey Parwich along the landing while Rick Bamford sat in a corner painting oddly shaped figures onto a black canvas.
It had all been rather disturbing and heaven knew what it meant â if anything. Dreams were like that, deluding you into thinking they were of great significance when it was just your subconscious sorting through the day's events before dumping them into the landfill of the mind. Shaking herself free from it, she pulled on an extra thick sweater; the weather outside still showed no signs of spring and the forecast offered no promise of increased temperatures.
"Well, really! Of all the nerve!"
Loren replaced the receiver as her twin appeared in the living room.
"What's up?"
"I've just spoken to the ward sister. Magda's discharged herself. She told the nurses she had to go back to work."
"Oh? What work?"
Linzi sat on the sofa and rammed her slim feet into a pair of black leather boots.
"At a detective agency, would you believe?"
"What?"
"I know. I was so surprised I nearly dropped the phone."
Loren's indignation was so apparent, Linzi couldn't help but laugh.
"Well, to be fair, we were thinking of offering her a job."
"Yes, but she wasn't to know that. She was in a hospital bed at the time."
"Calm down, Loren. Why are you getting so worked up about this?"
Loren ran her hands through her hair, throwing it back off her face. "I dunno. Perhaps because I think she needs to stay in the hospital. She's so dreadfully frail and thin."
"Yeah, well, she's hardly likely to fatten up on hospital food, is she?" Linzi lifted coats off the pegs and threw one at Loren. "Come on. It's nearly nine o'clock."
The phone was ringing when they got to the office. Linzi dropped her bag on her desk and snatched it up.
"Gemini Detective Agency. Good morning."
"This is Lady Lockington. Do you have any news for me yet?"
What again? The woman's becoming a pain, thought Linzi, irritably. It was only two days since she'd given them a deadline.
"We are currently checking on pawn shops, Your Ladyship," she said, hoping that would be reassuring. "We trust we will have some positive news for you very soon."
"I sincerely hope so. Thank God that Henry's in London and can't see the state I'm in. I'm relying on you two."
"Don't worry, you'll have the Lockington Diamonds in time." Linzi crossed her fingers.
"Are you sure? I don't want to think my confidence in you has been misplaced."
"Well, as sure as I can be, Your Ladyship.
